NICHE project supported 101 health workers further studies

Christian Social Services Commission (CSSC) through Netherlands Initiatives for Capacity Development in Higher Education Institutions (NICHE) project has managed to support 101 health workers from 50 church owned health facilities to undertake further trainings in their field as part of carrier development, aiming to enhance Teaching and learning process including strengthening institutional management systems.
 
Sharing the updates of the program implementation, NICHE program Coordinator, Mr. Michael Angulile said that, staffs supported were selected from church owned health facilities implementing NICHE project, and they were doing various courses in different levels.
 
Furthermore, Mr. Angulile disclosed that, 7 tutors were sponsored for master in nursing education at Kenya Methodist University (KEMU), 1 (m) is taking a Bachelor degree in nursing education as well, while 29 students were sponsored for pursuing their medical education Diploma at Centre for Education Development in Health Arusha (CEDHA) for academic year of 2011/ 2012.
 
 43 tutors from various health training institution ( HTI’s) were trained on skillslab management and teaching approaches, while 21 tutors were capacitated as TOT on gender mainstreaming approaches in HTI’s. Health facilities implementing NICHE project include; St. Gaspar, Bugando, Ifakara, Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) School of nursing and Mvumi nursing school.
 
Despite of sponsorship provided, NICHE project managed to undertake rehabilitation to different facilities at St. Gaspar, Mvumi, KCMC and Bugando Nurse tutor school, covering classes, skills labs, computer rooms, Libraries, and ablution as part of  infrastructural improvement.
 
Before rehabilitation, the project did an infrastructure assessment in February 2012 using the standard tools adopted from MoHSW construction unit to determine the current, rehabilitation and future needs to be supported in the HTI’s.
 
NICHE is a project under CSSC supported by Netherland University Foundation for International Cooperation (NUFFIC) which is focusing at improvement of capacity of the health training institutions owned by FBOs particularly churches to scale up production of quality mid- level cadre health workers as one way of addressing the national Human resource for health (HRH) crisis in the country.
