The prevention of HIV transmission from mother to child campaign was inaugurated by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania Dr. Jakaya Kikwete in Dar es Salaam in 2012, CSSC in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is implementing the project, says Dr. Benedict Adrea, PMTCT focal person of the ART program.

Christian Social Services Commission (CSSC), in collaboration with Mwanza Regional Office has officially launched Option B+ programme in Mwanza to promote awareness in implementing this programme. Option B+ is a new PMTCT initiative aiming at eliminating new HIV infection to infants and keeping good health of their mothers.

The effort takes in antenatal clinics, maternity services and post natal clinics and other services targeting women and children reaching about 71 percent of all HIV positive pregnant women and providing them with ARVs. At the moment the programme has enlightened 557 health service providers from 222 PMTCT sites in Mwanza.

The roadmap after launching includes;

  • Post training follow-up, mentorship and supervision
  • Community engagement and sensitization such as meetings with local community leaders and media involvement to ensure increased public awareness
  • Integration of option B+ into other services like Safe motherhood and linkage to the community
  • Use of Appointment and Tracking registers to capture dropout before they are lost to follow-up
