Need to establish health PPP forums- Dr. Kahabi

In June 2014, CSSC in collaboration with Catholic Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam jointly conducted an exposure visit to Nyota ya Bahari health centre at Mkuranga District to assess the status of Public Private Partnership (PPP) implementation between Mkuranga District Council and Faith Based Organization (FBO)’s health facilities as the best way of improving more healthcare provision to the district.

According to the report presented, it was found that, Mkuranga district has good collaboration with FBO’s Health Facilities. It has been involved in addressing Human resource issues by allocating staffs, some drugs and supplies (delivery beds, delivery kit, fuel for outreach services etc.) to FBO’s facilities. Additionally, there is involvement of the community and its leaders in health centre committees to oversee the progress of the centre.

Commenting on the efforts done, CSSC Health Technical Advisor, Dr. Jane Kahabi said that, the discussion and collaboration between Government especially local government and FBO is the best way of solving the merging challenges such as inadequate knowledge and understanding of PPP concept among health Stakeholders.

Furthermore, Dr. Jane went on saying that, the establishment of forums in district is the important strategy which helps to establish a good relationship between FBO’s facilities and local government whereby they can use forums as the platform of discussing how to improve health services in district by solving some of the challenges.

However, some of the challenges being found are inadequate resources ( human, financial and materials) to run the facilities and  very little contribution from the community ( cost sharing), inadequate knowledge and understanding of PPP concept among the FBOs and Local government authority.
