Manages to mitigate many training challenges

The Christian Social Services Commission (CSSC) in partnership with regional partners -Tanzania Training Centre for International Health (TTCIH), Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), the Health Promotion Tanzania (HDT) and Community Health Promotion Kenya (CHPK) and international partners (Hanzehoge school Groningen (HG) and the University of Groningen have been implementing a project funded by the Netherlands Initiative for Capacity Building in Higher Education (NICHE) known as  NICHE/TZA/001 since 2010, aimed at strengthening privately run pre-service health training institutions for enhanced enrolment and quality of health workers in Tanzania and comes to an end in April 2014. To date, great progress in achieving the set objectives has been realised.

Speaking during the closure of the project, the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Local Government and Regional Administration (PMORALG), Dr. Deodatus Mtasiwa said that, CSSC collaborated with government in reducing Human Resource challenges in the health sector by improving skills, competencies and retention mechanism. He added that qualified health practitioners, health training colleges and tutors have been groomed.

CSSC Executive Director Mr. Peter Maduki said that, progress was achieved against set objectives. Indeed there is a lot that can be done as the sector lacks Human Resources, infrastructure, teaching tools and few students enrol at the relevant training institutes.NICHE project under the CSSC coordination has managed to mitigate many of the training challenges that exist in our privately owned health training institutions and serves as an example of a sustainable project with impact at both central and institutional levels. A few of the key achievements with regard to the strengthening of privately run training institutions include:

  • Development of competence-based curricula for tutors and preceptors that was tested, tutors oriented and practiced ;
  •  Establishment of clinical skills laboratories that provided opportunity to translate knowledge into skill before meeting patients hence considerably minimizing wastage of medical supplies by student nurses;
  • Enhanced leadership and governance capacity of Health Training Institutions through a hands-on mentoring program that translated into improved human resource management, sound financial management, monitoring the teaching program and informed planning and decision making;
  • Improved tutors’ capacity through the implementation of a fellowship program for them to gain higher qualifications.
